Black Beauty

Problem:

Redesign the classic book Black Beauty emphasizing the reason it was banned

 

Solution:

The book was banned for a misinterpretation of its title which was thought to support Black Woman and the Black Power movement of the 1970s. I used photos and quotes from the Black Lives Matter movement to show how racism affected black people and as a reminder that it is still a problem today.

Research:

I mainly used secondary resources to find information on the book Black Beauty and the Black Lives Matter movement. I found all of the Black Lives Matter movement images on the website Unsplash and I found the quotes on the website Today.com. The websites Enotes and Interesting Literature had information on the summary of the book, the book’s message, analysis and information about the characters.

 

Challenges:

I had difficulty with laying out the margins of the text boxes. I had to be sure that the text did not run off the page and be cut in the printing process. Page numbering was an issue too since some pages did not need the page numbers and some did, so I had to go into the primary pages and change the settings so that I could manually delete page numbers on the pages that didn't need them. I also remember having issues with the text leading since the Black Lives Matter text did not want to be changed probably because it was downloaded from a website. I believe I had to reinstall the software in order to get the text leading to work.

Learnings: 

I learned how to design a book including how to set up a grid so that the text and images do not bleed off the pages or get cut during printing. I also learned the layout of a book includes the spine, front matter, back matter and preface. The front matter includes important information about the publisher and author as well as the title page, preface, dedication page, copyright page and table of contents. The colophon AKA copyright page has the edition dates, ISBN, where the book was printed and published, and the copyrights. The preface is an introduction to the book and how it came to be; written by the author. The back matter usually includes the acknowledgements and the bibliography or reference list of all the cited work used in the book.
